A six-year boy from Sarajevo, Zejd Coralic, was born completely deaf. Last year, his mother decided to send him to a school where only children who can hear learn. The toddler wasn’t very happy, because he couldn’t communicate with his peers. None of them knew sign language.
Their teacher, Sanela Ljumanovic, wanted to help the boy somehow. She began to use her own symbols to communicate with him, but soon found out that her method is ineffective. She then decided that both she and all children should learn sign language. Three months later, students of the first class in the Osman Nakas elementary school, flawlessly mastered the basics.
Now Zejd can’t wait to go to school. He is finally happy and motivated – said Mirza Coralic, the boy’s mother.
