All over the world, there are many nursing homes in which elderly and sick people reside either temporarily or permanently. No one remembers them quite clearly! Some people don’t have families, others end up there because of their loved ones, who have decided to put them in this sad place, in the hope that they will be better off there than at home.
The staff and nurses are often so busy with their duties, that they have no opportunity to get to know the people staying there. They do not come into closer relationships with them and they aren’t interested in what they do in their spare time. It’s a pity, sometimes you can learn a lot of interesting things about them.
Mak Filiser died in the geriatric ward of a nursing home. When the time came to clean his room, one of the nurses saw a poem titled “Cranky Old Man.” The words that it contained captivated and moved her a lot. She decided to make some copies and distribute them among the employees. Look at what the ill patient wrote!
Cranky Old Man
What do you see nurses? … What do you see?
What are you thinking … when you’re looking at me?
A cranky old man, … not very wise,
Uncertain of habit … with faraway eyes?
Who dribbles his food … and makes no reply.
When you say in a loud voice …’I do wish you’d try!’
Who seems not to notice … the things that you do.
