This Dog Realized That A Newborn Stopped Breathing! He Did Something That Surprised Everyone!
It is widely known that a dog is the best human friend. If it weren’t for the dog, 9 weeks baby girl would be certainly dead. Duke was adopted by the Brousseaus family 6 years ago.
He quickly accepted a new surroundings. He turned out to be faithful and caring minder that didn’t leave its family even for a minute.
That night, he was very alert. When the baby was sleeping in her cod, the dog noticed something strange. Her breath was irregular and it worsen with every minute. Finally, Harper stopped breathing…
The dog burst into the Barents bedroom and was jumping on the bed until the couple woke up. Shocked parents didn’t know what happened.
If some human was actually around to realize that the baby’s breathing was not normal, why would they wait for a dog to alert them she had stopped breathing before doing something? I find this a questionable part of this story.
The parents were in bed, they wouldn’t no what had happened
Obviously most of the negative people on this subject have not researched service dogs. Dogs can do so much more than most people know.
Thanks Christopher W. for your statement. I know of two instances that dogs have saved people from death. Their sense of smell in these instances were what saved one lady and my daughter’s dog woke her up by insistent pawing on her until she woke up. Her blood sugar was dangerously low and her heart would have stopped if it hadn’t been for her dog. Diabetics have a certain smell when their sugar is very high or low.
Wonderful story. I’m glad the baby is doing well and the family dog is happy his forever home is safe again. My dog alerted us at about 3 am to someone trying to steal out car, I opened the front door, didn’t see anything at first then seen what looked to be two shadow figures running away, the next morning in the snow we seen foot prints in the snow that shouldn’t of been there as we shovelled the lane way just before meal hour and no one had been to the house that day. The other week the dog started getting agitated while I was cooking evening meal, I turned to see that my granddaughter had gotten her leg stuck under the couch, I helped her free the leg and no damage to her, just some scared tears. Dogs are amazing at detecting abnormalities that we don’t see or hear. This isn’t training, it’s instinct that something is wrong. These types of dogs are easily trained to be Support Dogs as they are called here

I often wonder why it’s so much easier to say the incorrect word than the right word!
how can you know that the breathing started off irregular, then worsened every minute if there was no one there watching but the dog? Does this dog speak English or something? How much more of this article is complete and utter bullshit? Did you dream this up?
Is it possible that the doctor told them what the symptoms would have been after she was diagnosed? Think about it.
Good point! It must be made up. But it does happen in real life too!
This is the most poorly written article I’ve ever read.
The mother and father were asleep in another room which it plainly states in the article if you had read it.
Did a five year old write this? There are as many grammar mistakes as there are silly facts. I have all the faith in the world in dogs – they can and do miraculous things that can many times not be explained. Not this time. Where were the adults if not already in the room with the child – it seems to me that the child was not breathing, the parents went to the child then the dog reacted. Why would anybody make something up like this!?
All we KNOW, is that the dog woke the parents. Once awake, they happened to check the baby and fortunately it recovered.
How do we know the dog hadn’t sat on the baby’s face and caused its breathing problems? Then happened to go and simply jump up on the bed, possibly like it did quite often?
Oh please, STFU. BTW never own an animal, OK?
The dog became aware that something was wrong. Given that their senses are more sensitive than humans this story does have a fair amount of guesswork. I would suggest that the dog ws a little restless before the family retired., but it was only when it realised that something was very wrong with the baby that it “took firm action. ”
Never underestimate an animal.
And. How was a camera handy to take the dramatic photos, would you really worry about taking photos or would you deal with the baby ? Hmmmmm
Photos are from later dates. It’s just to show the dog and the baby.
I have 3 children all grown up now,but my 3rd child was asthmatic I was in the kitchen ,baby was in carry cot in lounge,i was cooking all of a sudden my Doberman came into the kitchen cought hold of my leg and started to pull at me,i just told him off,but he continued to do it and in his own way wanted me to go with him,i walked into the lounge and he started to bark at the cot,i immediately looked and my son had turned blue,if it wasn’t for Duke my Doberman it might have been to late to save my baby,so yes dogs do have a second site and know when something isn’t right
The dog doesn’t speak and there wasn’t anybody around – the parents were asleep. The dog noticed little girl’s distress and reacted. Can’t you take a bit of story telling without flying into an outrage? Lol
Years ago my cat (who was not allowed on the bed) reached up and kept patting my arm while I slept. She finally started howling at me. I was in the midst of an asthmatic attack and she knew something was horribly wrong. I dialed 911. By the time the emergency room doc could see me (about two and a half hours later), whatever had triggered the attack was no longer triggering my asthma. I still can’t believe the note the doctor wrote on my discharge papers – that I should perhaps see a shrink! It still irks me. They heard from my attorney.
All of the stupid negative comments about this should be ignored. They are obviously from people who have never owned a dog. The dog did a good thing. End of story. No need for the innuendos and second-guessing. That’s just nonsense.
Anyone can see that these photos aren’t from that night their child almost died. These are photos of the happy, relieved family on another day.
What a nice story. I have one to add… In the 80s, my husband and I were dog officers in our small NH town. We ended up adopting a large dog, who was a uniquely trained to protect. He was a mixed breed of malamute/husky. His name was Rastus. As folks who work full time will do, we both fell asleep in the living room one night while the TV was still on.
While I slept, I started dreaming that there was a news report of a fire on the TV. I started to cough and woke slightly to see Rastus trying to pull my husband out of his chair. He’d fallen asleep with his cigarette and the chair was smoldering. The house was filling with smoke and was quickly rising up the stairs. Rastus saved our lives!
When Dwight was fully awake, he pulled the smoldering chair outside, while I raced upstairs to cover my children’s faces with towels to protect them from the smoke. Then we aired out the house.
A couple years later, we were living in Manchester, and Rastus protected us again. A drug addict had wandered into our apartment by mistake in the middle of the night. Somehow, she’d pushed a forgotten door inward and was making her way toward the bedrooms. I heard Rastus growl, and a woman screaming and yelling in our dark apartment.
When we switch on the light, we found her. From her injuries, we could see that Rastus had started holding her back with his teeth starting at the ankles and working his way up with each step she took toward the family, until he had her by the gut. The police K9 officer fell in love with our dog that night, but Rastus already had a family to love.
We all miss him and think of him often.
Who wrote this? The story is touching but the English it terrible!
My dog saved my life. i have sleep apnea and do not use cpap but natural product for sleep apnea. One night , I was sleeping and held my breath longer than normal, my dog came up and poking me my ribs to wake me up and breath. This was the one time when my dog saved my life. She was not trained in this situation, She just simply poke her paws into my ribs to wake me up and breath. She is mixed poodle and is a small dog. I am glad she woke me up or I would have died .
This dog, Duke, is the physical ‘exact’ of my female, Tina, from many years ago. I could show some of my old pictures of ‘the monk’….her nickname….and they could be twins. This is a first in 45 years….bittersweet moment.
I saw, not I seen
we saw, not we seen
I often wonder why it’s so much easier to say the incorrect word than the right word!
Agreed. WORST writing ever here. Did NO ONE read that before they published it??? Embarrassing, at the very least!
ARE YOU SERIUS.? Did this story not touch you?
And you talk about grammar? Let he that has not sinned
throw the first stone. And I’m not even religious .
Ever so easy to cast the first stone!
In the South, I think people do it to emphasize their point, however, I had a student who is a registered nurse and her grammar was terrible. She told me she knew she was not speaking correctly, but she picked up the habit from her mother, who had no education. (not really a good excuse, is it?)
There could be a lot of reasons for the ‘incorrect word’ as you put it. This could have been written by someone with speech defects, learning disabilities, deafness (yes!) – and a simple lack of education. Let’s not forget English as a SECOND language, which is true for many people here on facebook. There may be many reasons for a lack of education — not the least of which is poverty. Couldn’t you just feel the sadness in her story instead of criticizing her literacy? Why is it so easy to criticize the anonymous writer?
This could just be a typing mistake. We have all done that. This was a beautiful story, and those who miss the story and only see the typing error, need to get a life. I’ll bet there are many things about you that could be criticized, but decent people don’t do that.
Hey brain stupid. It does not matter how the story was written, try reading the CONTENT ok?
you should read the things that James Whitcomb Riley wrote then come back and tell me this womans writing isn’t so bad.
I believe their story. I had a Chow / PitBull mix , (supposedly a real bad ass mix), she was the sweetest dog I have ever had the pleasure of having in our canine family. My husband had sleep apnea, we were not aware of it at the time. She would wake him up crying, or tugging on his hand while he slept. He woke up one night on the floor on his hands and knees gasping for breath, and she was standing over him. This is when he went for a checkup and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. So yes, dogs do have a keen sense when something is up. I just wish that they would be able to let us know when they are sick,. This pooch would walk around with a sneaker in her mouth, biting down on it and cry. I thought maybe she was nesting. She did had a liter at one time but we had her spayed. Turned out months down the line when she started to pull away from walks ( I thought it was her age), and stopped chasing squirrels away, then one morning she could not get up from her bed, and she had an accident, (something that never happened before). She was carried down the stairs, went to the vets office, and her belly was full of cancer. We had to put her to sleep as she was in pain and could no longer walk. I only wish that my canines would of been able to get the point across when they are sick, they can tell us.
Thank you for sharing this lovely touching story xx
I definitely believe this story. Dogs have an unusual sense of when something is wrong. Mostly by their 10x sense of smell above humans, which detects something is not right. My daughter’s dog woke her up by insistently pawing on her shoulder. As she awakened she realized her blood sugar was dangerously low. Diabetics have a strong fruity smell when their sugar is low. I thank God that her dog was in the room with her.
I had a male husky that I had to put down for cancer. He was a loving caring male that loved people and children. It hurt me bad to have to put down. They are not just dogs they are family.
I am so very sorry for your loss . Our pets mean the world to us don’t they? Often one becomes house bound and visitors are few. That warm soft fur under the fingers gives a sense of well being and yes can often be life saving. “Who saved who.”
My heart goes to you Marion, same thing is happening with my dear canine member of my family, like you said, she started not going for walks, or playing and doing all things that she used to do, later when she could not come out from her bed, we notice that she can’t see well , took to the vet and the diagnostic: she was blind! she is 10 years old, american pit bull and the vet said is because she is old, otherwise she is healthy and like you said they can’t tell us .
How sad to see so many critical comments about this beautiful story of the dog who saved a baby’s life! I have never seen such critical responses from so many. Wow… this is so sad to see how negative some humans can be in our world. The beautiful message that was sent, was so much more important than your criticism of a few incorrect spelling mistakes… Having the courage to share an important message with us all… Does not “Give others who feel they are soooo perfect… the right to criticize others! Feeling sorry and sad for those who have written with sarcasm and accusations! It must be really tough to have to be so perfect all the time? You surely must miss so many precious gifts in real life… being so busy pointing out a small mistake of another and missing the whole message! Pretty sad for sure!
I had the impression English is their second language. Our dog used to sleep under my babies bassinet and would not go for a walk, eventually as baby got bigger, she began to go outside again.
Cat, you have put wonderfully what I was thinking, These opinionated people are thankfully in the minority and certainly don’t detract from these lovely stories !
“the baby was sleeping in her cod”? No wonder she nearly died. I’ll bet sleeping in a cod smells dreadful. Who writes and edits these things? Stupid question — these articles are all about attracting us to the page so the company reaps money from the ads we all see.
look, we all know you are a troll who cruises these types of stories in hopes of making some smart ass response. If you ‘re sure the story is an ad gimmick, why are you here?
Oh dear, still laughing!! I didn’t notice that. So funny. Well spotted. 🙂
You truly are a bitch. Even a fool would know this was a typo!
Communication is the name of the game. All the people complaining could read and understand the story. The lady is not a professional writer and probably like me a self taught typist. However, she did a good job of getting her story over. How arrogant that you all should rush into print to show her how much better at writing than her you are
Um…no. The story is poorly written; it has numerous errors in grammar, word choices,, and syntax. The sentence structure is overly simple, and the story is actually hard to follow because of all the errors. I would guess that English is a second language for the author.
Have you ever read anything written by James Whitcomb Riley he is a published author, he was way before our time but when you read some of what he wrote it’s a little hard to figure out. To bad people can’t just gloss over the misspellings and other mistakes, she is not a famous author, she is just you and me. She was doing her best I think to tell her story, her story no one else, I don’t think you are perfect either. If people won’t so critical of others this world sure would be a better place. http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/little-orphant-annie/
Isn’t that the truth
@SHR: Not “how much better at writing than her you are”; you should have written “how much better at writing than SHE you are”. When writing is public the reader has every right to expect perfect grammar and spelling so stop your sanctimoniousness.
Wish there had been a smart dog around when our great grand baby died at 10 weeks, so glad baby is ok.
Dogs are especially smart, protective, loyal, and caring, which makes it all the more heartbreaking when people betray their love and trust.
Absolutely!! I will never understand or accept how people can be so cruel to other living beings. I’ve many stories of animals saving people young and old.
the minute I saw the word cod rather than the word cot I knew what was coming…..never fails does it
Beautiful story of a precious animal, knock off the cruel remarks, Plez ( did you notice I spelled it wrong ?) Animals are wonderful..
Wonderful story. Darling, heroic animal. Writer must beESL and needs more practice in written English. No need SHR to accuse someone of arrogance. After all, “communication is the name of the game.”
God bless the dog. He knew something was wrong! God created a smart dog! I am so happy that Harper is doing fine!
I have emphysema. If I sleep on my back I can’t breathe. One night guess I rolled over and quit breathing. I was awakened by my dog jumping on my chest and poking my mouth with his snout. When I was able to get up and get to meds in the bathroom, I noticed in the mirror my lips were blue. Now my dog is gone. Who will save me if it happens again?
When I was growing up I was told that early man domesticated the dog. I believed that until I became an adult. Actually, it was the dog that domesticated man and not the other way around.
Thanks Robert. I heard recently that God (by whatever name) made a huge mistake when he gave human beings an exaggerated notion of their importance among species who share this space . I wish I could recall the source of this article, but I hope you will find it
I have yet to hear of any creature which is as dependant as human beings – and I hesitate to mention the cruelty which these humans inflict on one another, and the other species on this planet..
Human beings are so stupid that they think they are smart,
The dog noticed that the baby’s breathing changed–what? Was the dog interviewed for this story?
That is why I love animals, in particular, dogs! They are so special. At this time I am dogless. This is the first time in my 73 years of life that I haven’t had a dog (or cats). I need a dog for my mental well being. My husband says “No”
because when they pass, it is so heartbreaking. But I know there is a dog out there who needs me and I need the dog.
What a beautiful story about man’s best friend.
It is a story about a dog saving a child’s life. Wonderful!
Thank you for sharing your story with us.
Beautiful story about a child saving a baby’s life.
Thank you for sharing this with us.
