Qian Hongyan comes from a very poor family. She and her parents live in a poverty stricken neighborhood in the Yunnann province in China. In 2000, she lost her leg in a tragic car accident. She was only four years old then.
The parents couldn’t afford an expensive prosthesis for their daughter. The found another solution for their problem. The taught the girl to get around by using a ball, which they attached to her hip. She quickly became known as the “Basketball Girl”.
In 2005, Qian’s story was published in the chinese press. Her fate touched many people, who decided to help her. Soon she arrived in Beijing, where she received artificial limbs for free.
