In global rankings, the Chinese economy is booming! Tremendous market growth and immense export of products have it ranked as the second largest (after the US). But there is a statistic that puts China last – the approach of the Chinese to animals.
It is in this country that dogs are eaten by the dozen. During the annual festival in Yulin, thousands of pets are slayed. Before they land on the table as a desirable treat, they are beaten and abused. The Chinese believe that thanks to this, their meat will be nobler. An article about the cruel festival in Yulin is located HERE.
At Chinese train and subway stations, for about $1.50, you can buy a very unusual key chain. It is plastic and measures approx. 3 inches. Inside of it is a living animal surrounded by colored water. These animals are mostly tiny turtles, colorful fish or lizards.
The baggies are completely sealed. There is no air inside, and there is no way to feed the trapped animal. Apparently, the colored water in which they swim is a “special mixture” that provides nutrients to the turtles. They are able to survive for two months in these conditions. Of course, in the absence of oxygen, they may die much earlier.
What happens to them after 2 months? You will find out by reading the second part of this entry, available on the next page!
