The UN has recently estimated that around 70% of relationships made in African countries happen by force. An especially bad situation is in Ethiopia, where young women are brutally forced into marriage. Handing over very young women, and even small children, happens often with the parent’s agreement. If that doesn’t happen, the future young brides are kidnapped and forced to take a husband.
This smiling twelve-year-old girl in the picture below was going home from school when a group of seven men assaulted her. The gang was famous in the area for kidnappings, brutal attacks and rapes. Our heroine was to become the wife of one of them.
