Nellie Osborn does not have close family and for years has lived alone.
Her second husband died of a stroke 30 years ago and since then the woman has not been involved with anyone since the time of her husband’s death at 70-years old. And although she was always surrounded by a bunch of good friends and acquaintances, supportive and always willing to help, most of them today are already dead, or have moved far away.
The woman, always leading an active social life, feared that she would have to spend her 100th birthday alone, with her terrier, Scruff. Outside of her stepdaughter, who lives in another state, Nellie does not have a family, so it seemed, then, that she would not find anyone who could help her in organizing even a symbolic get-together. But the 81-year-old friend of the women, Deryck Sutton, decided to make sure, that on the day of her birthday guests would be knocking at her door.
So she prepared and distributed a leaflet-invitation so that people would know that the old lady’s house will be open on her birthday to benevolent people.
