This mental asylum was built in New York in 1869. Typically, patients would spend all their lives there, until 1995, when the place was shut down.
While work was being carried out on the building, the following discovery was made: more than 400 suitcases containing the personal belongings of patients were found.
Photographer Jon Crispin collected the luggage, checked their contents and photographed everything. The resulting exhibition was titled: “The Changing Face of What is Normal: Mental Health”. Each case tells a different story – some are sad, others moving.
The suitcases contain the personal belongings of patients, some even dating back to 100 years ago!
Everything is very well preserved.
The building was abandoned, but many things have not been moved
