Older people usually give us valuable life advice. They give us useful pointers and warn against mistakes which they had once made. In addition to the life tips, they sometimes entrust us with something else – the stories of their lives, sometimes very difficult and painful. They tell how it was “in their day”.
Some memories are so vibrant that it’s hard to believe them. It seems to us that what has happened to them is unrealistic and had no right to ever take place.
The Lopez siblings from Tampa, Florida never believed in the stories which their grandfather told them. They thought that the old man has a vivid imagination and didn’t really know what he was talking about. It was that way until a memorable trip to the attic. There they found something which made them speechless.
When they were children, he often mentioned his father Ernest Lopez. He claimed that their great-grandfather found the treasure of a famous Spanish pirate named Jose Gaspard. At that time they believed it was a thought-up fable, but recently they have learned that there was a grain of truth in the elderly man’s memories. Maria, his granddaughter, went up to the attic one day and discovered a box. Inside was a tattered map of Hillsborough River from 1930, old precious coins and a severed hand with a big ring.
