When the less than 17-year-old Shafilea disappeared, her parents asked for help to find her. Iftikhar and Farzana, the girls’ parents, were public and asked for information about what could have happened to their daughter. Searches were lasting, but they did not work. Half a year after the disappearance, Shafilea’s body was found in bushes almost 100 km from their home. Studies have shown that the girl was strangled with a plastic bag.
The parents were questioned and their body language indicated they knew more than they wanted to say but there was no basis for linking the death of the child to the parents. Iftikhar repeated that he could not even imagine losing his daughter. Asked if he wanted to marry her, he said it was untrue that he wanted his daughter to learn and achieve something in life. The parents had pouring tears from their eyes remembering their daughter.
The truth about what happened was revealed later when their younger daughter was arrested.
