Many people assume that only people are able to show feelings. They forget about animals which, as we, express sadness when a member of their pack departs.
Elephants grieve the most. It has been observed several times that they’ve wept over the loss of a loved one. Also, other animals such as whales and monkeys express their grief when they lose a loved one.
On the 23rd of September, 2008, at Cameroon’s Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center, died a female chimpanzee named Dorothy. She had been in the center for eight years and became very close with the other inhabitants. Unfortunately, as a result of heart failure, she passed away at the age of 40 years.
After her death, the monkeys showed great solidarity. When staff was wheeling her body off in a wheelbarrow, they watched in silence. Some of them showed their unity by hugging and holding hands. It was a beautiful and very sad experience at the same time.
Animals have proven that the fate of their brothers is important to them, and just like people, they can be affected by one’s death.
